Waltham Forest Council's planning committee granted permission for 750 new homes in Leyton at a virtual meeting - the first of its kind in the country.
Councillors gave the green light for Taylor Wimpey development Coronation Square, which will have 50% affordable homes, a new health hub, pre-school nursery and indoor sports centre.
Councillors maintained social distancing in a committee room, while officers and applicants used Microsoft Teams to participate at the meeting at the end of March.
Cabinet member for economic growth and housing development, Councillor Simon Miller, said he was “keen” to ensure the major scheme stayed on schedule, and heralded the meeting as a “great success.”
